Fighting the Social Stigma

Even after millions of years of evolution and a long history of gradual refinement, we still stand at the brink of disintegration every time something alien strikes upon us. The society, as well call it limits us in measures that we fail to notice once we learn to conform to the norms. Although we standing in the 21st century with monumental progression made in robotics and milestone achieved in cloning with astronauts surfing the space looking for other planet residents, our society cannot accept something simple as a difference. Today Vitiligo patients are socially outcaste just as people affected by AIDS because we still fail to live with something that is an exception from the norm.

A Little Self-Help
Stigma

Even decorated musicians, sports persons, actors, comedians, etc. have suffered the stigma and alienation from the society just because of a dermatological condition that is not even contagious. In tribal communities, members of the tribe can even be ostracized for being diseased with Vitilligo.
If you have suffered from Vitilligo and all the ridiculous consequences that the society has cast upon you, then you need to have a constructive approach.
  1. Firstly know that it can happen to anybody,
  2. And secondly, it is not embarrassing because it is only a medical condition that has affected your skin; you were not born with it
Worthy Engagements
People suffering from the disease dread social participation and turn into a loner, running for cover and distance from everybody and everything. Do not let this ruin all your chances of happiness.
  1. Keep yourself occupied in creative pursuits like blogging, writing poetries, composing music, shooting home videos, painting, dancing, cooking and everything else that you can do alone and still feel contended.
  2. Other times, stay close to friends who just take you as you are, even if that means a couple of just one of them.
  3. Travel a lot, meet new people, make new friends, see new places and learn new things. Get out of your hibernation, winter is long gone!
  4. Enroll in an online course if you are not comfortable to go back to school and learn a new language or a subject that has always interested you.
  5. Meditate so that you are in full control over your emotions and you can forget people’s eyes following you around or their vibes influencing you.
But, first of all see and doctor and seek cure or at least control over the development. Abide by the restrictions determinately, so that you start seeing results in time.
The List of Nos
  1. Do not be around sympathetic people if you do not want to wallow in self-pity.
  2. Do not let people lecture you on how unfair life can be and similar things that grow on you.
  3. Do not stop to talk to over-curious folks who stare too much and make you feel uncomfortable.
There is no definite way of changing people’s perception or how they treat you. However, you can try to spread awareness so that the future victims can find themselves in a less weird world.
